WPOPS vs MainWP: Tool or Service? An Honest Comparison (2026)

Most comparisons of these two are unfair, because they are not the same kind of product.

MainWP is a dashboard. You install it on your own server, connect your client sites, and it gives you one screen to run updates from. WPOPS is a team of people who do that work for you under your brand, as white label maintenance under your own brand.

So the question is not which is better. It is whether you want to do the work faster, or stop doing it.

  • Real costs at scale
  • Hourly crossover
  • Honest verdict

Last updated: October 2026. MainWP White Label and Pro Reports confirmed as Pro tier extensions.

At a glance

Quick summary

MainWP is free and self-hosted, with a Pro tier at $199 a year for unlimited sites. WPOPS is a done-for-you white label service at $79 per site per month. MainWP costs less at every volume. WPOPS costs less once your own billable rate passes roughly $105 an hour.

This page gives you the real numbers for both, including the one most comparisons leave out. For how we compare to everyone else, see the full hub.

Everything below follows from that first row. MainWP makes managing fifteen sites faster. It does not make managing fifteen sites someone else's job. For what maintenance actually covers when a team owns it, see the service page.

MainWP plans

Self-hosted dashboard

  • Essentials: free

Unlimited sites. Bulk updates, security scans, health checks, one click login, client profiles, uptime monitoring, cost tracking, and all free extensions.

  • Pro Monthly: $29 a month

Unlimited sites, plus 30 or more premium extensions and priority ticket support.

  • Pro Yearly: $199 a year

The same, at a saving of $149 against monthly.

  • Pro Lifetime: $599 once

One-time payment for Pro features and extensions.

Uptime monitoring is built in and needs no third party service, which is unusual at this price and worth saying. Backups come through an extension. White labelling and client reporting (White Label and Pro Reports) are Pro tier extensions, confirmed on mainwp.com as of October 2026.

There is no done-for-you option at any tier. Support means documentation, a Discord, a community forum and ticket support for the software itself.

WPOPS plans

Done-for-you white label

  • White Label: $79 per site per month

Staged updates, daily off-site backups with verified restore, uptime monitoring, security hardening and malware scanning, branded PDF and email reporting, NDA coverage, Slack or email handoff.

  • White Label plus Edits: $89 per site per month

The same, with unlimited small development edits included.

No contracts on any plan. See full pricing for Care and Perform too.

Most agencies bill this on to clients at $149 to $199 per site per month.

The real comparison

The number that actually matters is your hourly rate

Doing maintenance properly takes about 45 minutes per site per month once you count running updates, checking nothing broke, verifying backups and writing the report. That is 9 hours per site per year. WPOPS costs $948 per site per year. So outsourcing is cheaper than doing it yourself once your time is worth more than about $105 an hour.

~45 min

Time per site / month

9 hrs

Hours per site / year

~$105/hr

Crossover rate

That is the whole comparison in one line, and it is worth sitting with.

If you bill client work at $125 an hour, every hour you spend on plugin updates costs you $125 of revenue you did not earn. Nine hours per site per year is $1,125 of foregone billing, against $948 to hand it over. That is outsourcing the work entirely when your rate makes the labour more expensive than the retainer.

If you bill at $60 an hour, or you have idle capacity you cannot fill anyway, the maths runs the other way and MainWP is the better choice. Plenty of agencies are in that position and should stay there.

Scale

Volume comparison at 1, 5, 10 and 25 sites

Annual cost, software only:

Annual software cost comparison MainWP Pro versus WPOPS White Label
SitesMainWP ProWPOPS White Label
1$199$948
5$199$4,740
10$199$9,480
25$199$23,700

MainWP wins on price at every tier, and it is not close. Any comparison that pretends otherwise is selling you something.

Now the same table with your time added, at 9 hours per site per year:

MainWP annual cost including owner time at different hourly rates
SitesMainWP, hours of your timeCost at $50/hrCost at $125/hr
19$649$1,324
545$2,449$5,824
1090$4,699$11,449
25225$11,449$28,324

At $50 an hour MainWP wins at every volume. At $125 an hour WPOPS is cheaper at every volume, including a single site.

That is worth stating explicitly, because it is counterintuitive: the crossover is your hourly rate, not your site count. Both costs scale linearly per site, so adding sites does not change which option wins. It only changes how much is at stake.

One number worth looking at on its own: at 25 sites, MainWP costs you 225 hours a year. That is five to six working weeks. It does not appear on any invoice, which is exactly why it gets ignored.

Honest strengths

What MainWP does better

Say this plainly, because it is true.

  • Cost

Free, or $199 a year for unlimited sites. Nothing else in this category comes close.

  • You own your data

It runs on your server, not someone else's SaaS. No vendor can change terms, raise prices on you or shut down.

  • Open source

You can read the code, extend it, and nobody is going to deprecate your workflow.

  • No per-site pricing

Adding your fiftieth site costs nothing. With any service, it costs the same as the first.

  • Built in uptime monitoring

    Without a third party service.

  • Control

You decide exactly when and how every update runs.

If any of those matter more to you than time, use MainWP. We mean that. If you are weighing other agency services like GoWP or WP Buffs, those are done-for-you retainers, not dashboards.

Where we win

What WPOPS does better

  • The work is done

Not organised, not scheduled, done. This is the only difference that matters and everything else is detail.

  • Staged updates

Every update runs on a staging copy first, so a plugin conflict breaks there instead of on a client's live site. MainWP can trigger updates, but the testing is yours to do.

  • Capacity without hiring

Site 26 costs the same as site 1 in effort, which is none. With MainWP, site 26 is another 9 hours a year.

  • Someone responds at 2am

Critical issues are triaged within 1 hour.

  • Client-safe reporting under your brand

Written for a client to read rather than exported from a dashboard.

  • It survives your holiday

If you are the only person who knows the dashboard, nothing gets done while you are away.

Incidents

What happens when a client site breaks at 2am

MainWP sends you an email. It is a monitoring tool, so detection is where its job ends. WPOPS triages critical issues within one hour, diagnoses the cause, fixes it, and reports back under your brand. The difference is not detection speed. Both tell you quickly. The difference is who gets out of bed.

With MainWP

The alert fires or the client calls. Then it is your weekend: diagnose, fix, and explain.

With WPOPS

Critical issues are triaged within one hour. The first you may hear is Monday's summary: caught and rolled back under your brand.

Picture a plugin auto-update breaking a client's checkout on a Saturday evening. With MainWP you find out when the alert fires or when the client calls, and then it is your weekend. With a service, the first you hear of it can be the summary on Monday saying it was caught and rolled back.

Fit

Who should choose which

Who should choose MainWP

  • You manage fewer than 10 sites and have the hours
  • Your billable rate is under roughly $100 an hour, or you have unfilled capacity
  • You want to own your tooling and your data outright
  • You genuinely enjoy the control, and some people do
  • You are early and cash is tighter than time

Who should choose WPOPS

  • You manage 10 or more client sites and maintenance is eating your billable week
  • Your time bills at $100 an hour or more on client work
  • You want to add clients without hiring an ops person
  • You need staged updates rather than hoping an update is clean
  • You want a named human responsible when something breaks
  • You want to resell maintenance at $149 to $199 a site and keep the margin without doing the labour

Hybrid

Can you use both?

Yes, and some agencies do. MainWP gives you a single dashboard view across every site you touch, including ones you host or built but do not maintain. WPOPS handles the sites on a maintenance plan. You keep oversight, we do the recurring work. The two do not conflict, because one is a window and the other is labour.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is MainWP really free?

Yes. The Essentials tier is free on unlimited sites and includes bulk updates, security scans, uptime monitoring and client profiles. The Pro tier at $199 a year adds 30 or more premium extensions and priority support. There is no per-site fee at any level. It is one of the better free tools in the WordPress ecosystem.

Does MainWP do the updates for me?

It runs them when you tell it to, across every connected site at once, and it can set automatic updates. What it cannot do is test them first or fix what breaks. Someone still has to check that the site still works afterwards, and with MainWP that someone is you.

How much time does managing sites with MainWP actually take?

About 45 minutes per site per month, covering updates, checking nothing broke, verifying backups and preparing a client report. At 10 sites that is 90 hours a year. Bulk updating is fast. Everything around it is what takes the time.

Can I white label MainWP for my clients?

Yes, through a Pro tier extension that hides MainWP branding from the child sites. Client reporting is a separate Pro Reports extension. Both work well. The difference with a service is that white labelling the tool still leaves you doing the work, it just means your client does not see the tool.

Is WPOPS cheaper than MainWP?

No. MainWP costs less at every number of sites, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. WPOPS is cheaper only once you price your own hours in, at roughly $105 an hour or above. Below that, MainWP is the better financial decision.

Can I switch from MainWP to WPOPS without disruption?

Yes. You can keep MainWP running throughout. We take over the maintenance work on whichever sites you choose, and you can move one client first to see how it goes before moving more. There is no contract, so you can stop whenever you want.

Ready to hand off the work?

Plans start at $79 a site per month with no contract, and you can start with one client site. If you want us to look at what you are managing first, send the list and we will tell you what it would cost.
